Save on Gifts with RetailMeNot.com
When I need a coupon code for online checkout, more often than not RetailMeNot.com has it. RetailMeNot.com collects more than 150,000 coupon codes for 30,000 online stores, offering one of the best clearinghouses for instant savings.
I’ve scored discounts or free shipping for gift purchases from Cheryl & Co., ProFlowers, Z Gallerie home furnishings, iStockPhoto and more. Simply search for the retailer you are buying from and skim the coupon results. Coupons and shopping tips often include the success rate. Less successful or expired offers are ranked lower on the list. (RetailMeNot.com keeps expired coupon codes because sometimes the offers extend after their expiration dates.) You can save offline too. In April 2009, RetailMeNot.com added 90,000 printable coupons by zip code for brick-and-mortar stores.
If you know a coupon code, you can share it with others on RetailMeNot.com. With more than 4 million visitors a month, the coupon code you found will get noticed. Keep in mind that RetailMeNot.com honors those retailers requesting to have their coupon codes removed.
And it’s good to see the site owners have a sense of humor. Try the U.S. Federal Reserve Board coupon codes. Entering the code BAILOUT at the Fed gives you 25% off when you spend $700 billion or more. Type in AUTO and you’ll save 50% when you spend $50 billion or more.

As givers of gifts, sometimes we encounter problems with retailers. Perhaps the retailer sent the gift too late, sold damaged goods, offered a sub par experience, shipped to the wrong destination or even delivered the wrong gift altogether. In my MBA service management course this spring, we called these service failures. Our textbook authors, James and Mona Fitzsimmons, shared some statistics on word of mouth and service failures.
- The average business only hears from 4% of their customers who are dissatisfied with their products or services. Of the 96% who do not bother to complain, 25% of them have serious problems.
- The 4% complainers are more likely to stay with the supplier than are the 96% non-complainers.
- About 60% of the complainers would stay as customers if their problem was resolved and 95% would stay if the problem was resolved quickly.
- A dissatisfied customer will tell between 10 and 20 other people about their problem.
- A customer who has had a problem resolved by a company will tell about 5 people about their situation.
From these statistics, the authors conclude “that a quick resolution to service failure is an important way to create loyal customers.” In other words, businesses need to focus on service recovery: empower front-line employees to make wrong situations right. My business professor reached a more proactive conclusion. Service firms should train people and invest in systems to prevent the service failures in the first place.
I agree with my professor. Once a customer receives poor service, retailers need to expedite (i.e., spend more time and money) to win that customer back. Service recovery should be a secondary strategy. Yes, online shoe seller Zappos.com made my gift order right last Christmas. But I would have been more satisfied if Zappos.com shipped my wife’s Uggs slippers undamaged when she opened them on Christmas Day.

During my spring break from graduate school, my wife and I saw the clever comedy Juno. My favorite scene comes toward the end of the movie. (Minor spoiler ahead.)
Paulie heads out for his morning run and sees a message scrawled on the porch, telling him to check the mailbox. He opens the curb-side mailbox, and scores of orange tic tac containers spill out. He smiles widely. Paulie sees Juno later that day.
Paulie: Did you put like, a hundred things of tic tacs in my mailbox?
Juno: Um, yeah, that was me.
Paulie: Why?
Juno: Well, you know, because they’re your fave. And I figured you could never have enough of your favorite one-calorie breath mints.
I love this idea: overflowing a loved one’s mailbox with a favorite candy (after the postal carrier delivers the mail). If the mailbox is not your own, be careful with the U.S. Postal Service. Technically speaking, anything that goes into a “customer mail receptacle” must bear postage and be delivered by the USPS.

While there are 10 days until Christmas, online retailers will start charging for expedited shipping soon. For example, Amazon will suspend its Free Super Saver Shipping on Monday, Dec. 17, 2007. After that, Amazon’s U.S. shipping rates will rise throughout next week.
Let’s say you wanted to buy Amazon’s bestselling (and most gifted) DVD, Planet Earth: The Complete Series. Since this DVD set costs more than $25 (current price is $55), free Super Saver Shipping applies right now (Dec. 15, 2007). But if you were to wait…
- Standard shipping rates (ends Dec. 18, 2007) will cost about $4 in shipping for this DVD.
- Two-day shipping (ends Dec. 20, 2007 at 5 p.m. Central time) will rise to about $7.
- One-day shipping (ends Dec. 22 at 3 p.m. Central time) will charge you the most: about $12.
If you are an Amazon Prime member, getting “all-you-can-eat” shipping, the deadlines are similar. But the shipping charges are waived up to Dec. 20, 2007 at 5 p.m. Central time. After then, Amazon Prime’s One-day shipping is $4 per item.
Other standard shipping cutoffs for popular e-tailers are as follows.
- Buy.com will allow standard shipping until 2 p.m. Central time on Dec. 17, 2007.
- Overstock.com ends its standard ground shipping at 1 a.m. Central time on Dec. 18, 2007.
- Target.com suspends standard shipping at 11:30 p.m. Central time on Dec. 18, 2007.
- Wal-Mart.com will provide standard shipping until 1:30 a.m. Central time on Dec. 19, 2007.
- Nordstrom will offer standard shipping until 2 p.m. Central time on Dec. 19, 2007.
- Best Buy will ship in-stock items at standard rates until 10 a.m. Central time on Dec. 20, 2007.
