With a blog name like Gift Giving Guy, it’s no surprise that my top Google searches seek guy gift ideas. I don’t narrow my focus to gifts for men, but I’ve included more posts about guy gifts to meet the need. Here is an index of my posts for guy presents below, updated as I write more.

I stunned my wife with five blue boxes from Tiffany’s for her birthday. Before you ask me which lottery I won, understand that I bought “one” item from Tiffany.com in five parts. I’ve given my wife the Blue Box many times before, but never five of them at once. Tiffany & Co. kindly wrapped each item separately in five of its classic robin-egg blue boxes.

Before she untied the first Tiffany bow, I did clue her in: the five boxes were a gift of one — not a second mortgage on our home. She opened the first box and discovered the sterling silver chain bracelet. “A charm bracelet?” she asked excitedly. “Yes,” I said. The next four boxes had silver charms, each with a Tiffany theme. My favorite of the charms was a miniature Tiffany Blue Box, a tradition since 1837.

Here is my advice for men seeking Tiffany jewelry as gifts:

  • Watch for what style of jewelry she wears (and does not wear). Is her style more traditional or trendy? For example, I know my wife prefers more traditional silver or platinum jewelry to coordinate with her wedding ring.

  • If you are buying Tiffany’s, visit an actual Tiffany & Co. store or shop at Tiffany.com. Avoid buying Tiffany jewelry or “Tiffany inspired” designs on eBay.com. (In 2006, Tiffany & Co. sent nearly 135,000 legal notices to take down eBay auctions.) Most women know the blue box; if you give it, make sure it’s genuine Tiffany & Co.

  • Consider having her initials machine- or hand-engraved, if available for your selected jewelry design. If ordered from Tiffany.com, hand engraving will add two weeks to delivery; machine engraving adds three to five days.

  • When ordering during the holiday season, remember that the Tiffany bow’s white satin ribbon becomes red.

The Class of 2011 heads to college in the coming weeks. If you’re looking to send off your favorite undergraduate with a gift or a dorm-warming present, here are ten suggestions for new freshmen.

  1. Visit the college’s web site for merchandise at the book store, spirit shop or gift shop. Or you might go with the classic “College” t-shirt or sweatshirt from Animal House.
  2. For coffee drinkers: Senseo Single-Serve Gourmet Coffee Machine — I love the convenience of the Senseo, and I’m only in grad school part time.
  3. With different morning class times each day, the Neverlate seven-day alarm clock is a oversleeper’s best ally. As the name implies, your student can set a different alarm time for each day of the week.
  4. And if your student is not a morning person, consider Shower Shock Caffeinated Soap.
  5. Give a laundry bag customized in the school’s colors. If your student doesn’t know delicates from permanent press, try a college laundry bag with a Laundry 101 manual.
  6. Offer the Cliffs Notes to college life. Been There, Should’ve Done That II : More Tips for Making the Most of College is an excellent choice and a quick read.
  7. When difficult lectures need a second listening, give an Olympus digital voice recorder. I like Olympus products for their ease of use as well as Windows and Mac compatibility.
  8. Another two great “on-your-own” survival guides:
  9. Dorm rooms are staggeringly small in size. If your student is mechanically inclined, look into a bed loft that he or she can assemble.
  10. And if they don’t have them already, all college students want an iPod from Apple (even more than beer) and need a USB flash drive to store all that academic work.

Enter the upstairs study in our home, and you’ll see a treadmill, an iMac poised on a corner workstation, books on a credenza and a writing desk — all on hardwood floors. In other words, it’s a room collecting sweat and dust. My wife suggested I should get a “manly scented candle” to freshen up the study.

My first reaction was laughter. Nervous laughter. There is no such thing as a manly scented candle, I professed. As definitive proof, I summoned Google on the iMac and typed in manly candle, confident that I could count the search results on both hands.

Google humbled me. There were some 481,000 results for manly candles.

Mandles.

I clicked the first link and discovered the Manly Man Candle Company. The company’s name was set in maroon military stencil, flanked by angry bulls. The site declares it’s all about “[c]andles that were designed and developed with guys in mind. None of the ‘froo froo’ garbage, these are smells that guys like.” These white candles (and they only come in white) sit in a metal tin, suitable for storing nails, screws and washers when the candle is gone. Prices are $5 for 4 ounces, $7 for 8 ounces, and $13 for 16 ounces.

(Update on July 5, 2010: The Manly Man Candle Company is no longer in business. Try Mandles instead.)

The most popular Manly Man Candle scents to date:

  1. The Hunting Lodge: “A strong, woody outdoor scent accented by cedar…. Think back to your favorite cabin….”
  2. Wild Alaska: “A great outdoor scent” of pine that “doesn’t leave you thinking about pine cleaners.”
  3. Alpine: “Rain forest meets the alpine tundra…. It is not sweet and definitely not flowery.”
  4. Leather: “From a fine sports car to working gloves, the fresh smell of leather is always good to the nose.”
  5. The Coffee Shop: “This isn’t one of those sweet coffee smells that you find in most common candles, rather a good plain cup of joe.”
  6. Irish Springtime: “Will definitely remind you of a bar of Irish Spring…. There isn’t that soapy or sweet smell…”
  7. Yardwork: “This one smells like fresh cut grass.” “One of our company’s founders starts sneezing whenever he smells this candle.”

So would I appreciate one of these mandles as a gift? Yeah, probably. The Hunting Lodge, Leather or The Coffee Shop might be welcome in the upstairs study. Sometimes the best gifts are those you might like but you wouldn’t think of buying for yourself.
