Growing up, I loved to read and re-read Danny and the Dinosaur, Curious George, and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. All of these classic children’s books have something in common: they use first names in the titles. So when I’m seeking a gift for a young niece or nephew, I search for a children’s book with the child’s name in the title. Amazon.com’s Children’s Book Search almost always connects me with the right book gift.

Sometimes this search gives too many results based on the author name (and not enough named book titles), so you can also try Amazon.com’s Advanced Search. Type the child’s name into the Title field, select “Children’s Books” from the Subject field and click the Search button. I prefer to buy the hardcover editions for durability.

Using Amazon.com, I found children’s books for the top ten most popular girl names and most popular boy names, according to Wolfram Alpha.

    Where Are You Going, Emma?

A close co-worker gave birth to her first child yesterday. To celebrate the new arrival, I wanted to send her a gift. Most couples register for baby gifts at one or more places. So I checked what I perceive to be the top online baby gift registries.

  • Amazon.com Baby Registry
The juggernaut of e-commerce features a Universal Registry Button to allow couples to add the nine or so things that Amazon doesn’t sell.
  • Babies “R” Us: The Baby Registry
One of the affiliated Toys “R” Us chains, this retailer is the self-described “baby superstore.”
  • Baby Depot Baby Registry
Part of the Burlington Coat Factory, Baby Depot offers breakfast seminars to parents on infant CPR, baby nutrition, child safety and more.
  • The Bump Baby Registry
From the wedding-focused folks who brought you The Knot, try searching The Bump to find registries at Pottery Barn Kids, The Land of Nod, The Right Start and Giggle.
  • Target Baby Registry
I prefer pronouncing this retailer as “tar-ZHAY” in a terrible French accent.
  • Walmart Baby Gift Registry
Walmart offers an online thank you note tracker, simplifying gift acknowledgments.

I found the couple’s baby gift registries at three of the above sites, then selected gifts from one of the registries.

Defying the economic trend, the magic elves at Amazon.com scored their best holiday season ever. On its busiest day, Monday, December 15, 2008, Amazon.com processed a record-breaking 72.9 items per second. That’s 6.3 million items ordered worldwide in a single day. The online retail juggernaut also released its top three bestsellers in several categories for the 2008 holiday season.

My niece was baptized this month. To celebrate, we gave a christening gift based on her day of birth: she is a Monday’s child. Artist Barbara Olsen designs colorful wooden plaques based on the 19th-century “Monday’s Child” nursery rhyme.

Monday’s child is fair of face.
Tuesday’s child is full of grace.
Wednesday’s child is full of woe.
Thursday’s child has far to go.
Friday’s child is loving and giving.
Saturday’s child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Wednesday’s kid — that’s me, by the way — sure has it rough. So the artist changed “full of woe” to “full of laughter” on the plaques. You’ll find boy and girl versions in 6-by-8-inch ($29) and 9-by-9-inch ($50) sizes.

We ordered a 9-by-9-inch “Monday’s Girl” plaque from HaveABath.com and received outstanding customer service. The owner, Carol Vanacore, helped me expedite shipping and called to make sure the gift was received on time. My sister-in-law loved the plaque and recognized the rhyme immediately.

With the birth of my niece, I’m an uncle again. My wife and I celebrated the new arrival with a stylish gift for both baby and mom. We visited a local Vera Bradley store, home to an American designer known for its colorfully patterned bags. After some deliberation over the 17 patterns available, we chose the Mod Floral Pink Baby Bag with a matching Cool Keeper for baby bottles. We made sure to get a gift receipt in case the Mod Floral Pink pattern did not delight. Fortunately, my sister-in-law loved the bag and cooler. She had a nondescript freebie from the hospital, so her new baby bag was an indulgent upgrade.
