Last month, Michael Bublé released his new album Call Me Irresponsible. My wife and I love this crooner, so I surprised her with the CD yesterday. I could have instantly downloaded the songs from iTunes (there’s even a video and booklet included) for $12.99. Instead, I ordered from Amazon for $10.99 with free delivery.

When I’m giving a gift in person, I think it calls for something more tangible: the actual CD with the cover art and imprinted CD label. Sure, I could have burned the iTunes to CD, but the real thing feels, well, real.

But don’t get me wrong. iTunes is a great gift source for delivered gifts. I sent an instant e-mail gift certificate to my sister in Minnesota for her birthday, and she responded within minutes with a thank you. You also can give a specific song, album, audio book, TV show or movie by clicking the “Give this…” button in iTunes.

This really needs to be said: my wife is wonderful. She spent part of her day off shopping for items to complement a Tex-Mex fajita dinner for us on Friday night. My first gift: a metal grilling surface for sliced vegetables and meats. We have a Weber gas grill, and I usually grill sliced vegetables in a foil pouch to keep the veggies from falling into the flames. This grill topper sits on the grill bars, and the metal surface has small holes that nicely char the green and red peppers and onions.

For my second gift, my wife asked me to close my eyes and hold out my right hand as if I were grabbing something. I gripped cold, smooth glass. When I opened my eyes, I was holding a tall lager glass brimming with beer. It was Miller Chill, a new chelada-style light beer with a hint of lime and salt. I found the taste refreshing for a light beer.

As the title of this post implies, gifts aren’t just for appointed occasions. Everyday gifts — simple things without wrapping — keep a pleasant element of surprise in your relationship.
