What Makes a Great Gift #5: It’s Fitting
0 Comments
A great gift is fitting in so many ways. Sure, it’s the right size, style, and color. But more importantly, the gift fits the occasion, matches the giftee’s taste, and is appropriate to the relationship. Consider the fit of your gift by asking 10 common-sense questions.
- If you have a close relationship with giftee, does the gift reflect it? Does the occasion call for a romantic gift (e.g., anniversary or Valentine’s Day)?
- If you have an informal relationship, is the gift appropriate — not generic but also not too personal?
- Is the gift age appropriate?
- Does the gift respect the faith tradition and culture of the giftee?
- Is the gift appropriate for the occasion?
- Might the gift conflict with the giftee’s personal values and goals? (You may not want to send gourmet brownies to an avowed dieter.)
- Does the gift match a personal passion, interest or hobby of the giftee?
- If the gift is for business, might it be seen as a thoughtful token? Or (hopefully not) a lavish bribe?
- Might your choice of gift embarrass the recipient in some way, especially if opened within a group?
- If you were asked, could you easily explain why you chose the gift especially for your giftee?
