This fall, I celebrated 15 years with my employer. I imagine it’s not easy to choose gifts for several hundred people with many different roles. So my employer gives a gift catalog to those reaching work anniversaries for every five years of service. From nearly 100 options, I chose the Wilton Armetale Grillware Medium Round Bowl. I like this gift because I can grill vegetables and other “slip through the grate” foods, then serve them right from the bowl.

We all gathered for a luncheon and group photos with the president. Then we were called to accept our chosen gifts and the thanks of the senior leadership. Many of the women chose jewelry or Waterford crystal vases. Several men selected luggage, watches or fine pens.

It’s Sweetest Day, and my wife and I enjoyed coffee and Godiva chocolate biscuits on the sofa this morning.

Yesterday, I visited the downtown mall for my chocolate shopping, and I had lunch at the food court. While waiting in line for quesadillas, I ran into a co-worker. She was surprised to find me at the mall for lunch. I held up my shopping bag, and I said I was getting a Sweetest Day gift for my wife.

“Oh, my husband doesn’t do Sweetest Day,” she said. “He thinks it’s a commercial holiday.”

I smiled and said, “It’s a Midwestern tradition.”

But her husband does have a point about the commercial nature of Sweetest Day. The holiday came from the early 1920s. Cleveland, Ohio confectioners distributed more than 20,000 boxes of free candy to orphans and shut-ins. The giveaway was part an effort to inspire sweethearts to exchange candy presents and, in turn, boost candy sales.

Hallmark started making Sweetest Day cards in the mid-1960s, and this year has 163 greeting cards to choose from. So it’s easy to chalk up the day as one of those “Hallmark holidays,” invented primarily for commercial purposes.

But you can also choose view the day as another opportunity to express your love. You could give chocolates, flowers or a card. Or you could make an extra effort to show your love: kind words, a few more kisses, a good massage. I think of Sweetest Day as a ritual and a reminder to cherish the one I love.

I know it might be too early for some to mention Christmas presents (68 shopping days left). But I couldn’t resist this new survey from the Consumer Electronics Association. Researchers recently phoned more than 1,000 adults and teens and asked an open-ended question about what they want for Christmas this year. The most popular gift among adults: computers.

Same as last year, second place went to “peace and happiness.” Rounding out the top five are…
#3: a big screen TV
#4: clothes and
#5: money.

Computers scored as the top of mind gift for 2007, up from third place in 2006. Interestingly, the teen wish list did not change over last year: clothes, MP3 player, video games, computer and cell phone.

I’ll be the first to admit I have a love (and tremendous bias) for Apple computers. For a more balanced perspective on any significant consumer purchase, I like to check ConsumerSearch. This site “reviews the reviewers” and compiles the findings of Consumer Reports, the mainstream media (e.g., The Wall Street Journal), niche publications (e.g., PC World for computer reviews) and various product review web sites.

Here are ConsumerSearch’s review pages for:

There were no conclusive reviews found for peace and happiness.

My wife and I celebrated seven years of marriage this month. Our tradition has been to give gifts that follow the traditional anniversary gifts. And for the seventh anniversary, we exchanged gifts of wool and copper. For those seeking gift ideas for your seventh, here are the wool and copper gifts we unwrapped.

Do you celebrate Sweetest Day? The holiday, mostly found here in the U.S. Midwest, is a “mini Valentine’s Day” for couples giving candy, chocolates, flowers and greeting cards. First celebrated in 1922 in Ohio, Sweetest day is the third Saturday in October. (That’s this Saturday, Oct. 20.)

For Sweetest Day, I like to give my sweetest chocolates from:
